RFID tags can be passive RFID tags (the tags harvest the energy from the reader or antenna), active RFID tags (the tags have their own power source) or semi-passive (also called battery-assisted). The type of tag used most often in the supply chain is passive. An RFID tag consists of a microchip attached to a substrate which is then attached to an antenna. It is packaged so that it can be applied in some manner to an object, such as via adhesive applied to the back, inlayed in a smart label or encased in plastic. The RFID tag picks up signals from and sends signals back to the RFID reader. The RFID tag contains a unique serial number, but may have additional information, such as a SKU number or description of the product. An RFID tag can coincide with a barcode, thereby improving tracking of the product.
